WHAT: Major annual dog show called "The Desert Southwest Cluster"
HOSTED BY: Yuma and Imperial Valley Kennel Clubs
WHEN AND WHERE: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Monday at the Yuma County Fairgrounds. To know when a particular breed is showing go to www.jbradshaw.com/shows.htm and click on Yuma.
WHAT'S NEAT ABOUT IT: More than 1,200 dogs will compete and strut their stuff in numerous competitive events. One of those events is the rally competition, where the dog and handler move through 10-20 skill exercise stations to demonstrate teamwork.
Some of these dogs are among the nation's best, too, with some of the champions being animals worth up to $12,000. How they get to Yuma is pretty pricey, too. Event chairman Richard Lackey said he's seen some RV transports worth up to $250,000 used to chauffeur particularly pampered pooches.
THE BREEDS: Many breeds of dogs will be represented at the show, but check out these exotic dogs that aren't often seen by folks outside of dog show or breeding circles:
Ibizan hound (an old Egyptian breed)
Neapolitan mastiff (large, loose-skinned dogs)
Spinone Italiano (friendly dog often used as seeing eye dog)
LOCAL DOG LOVERS: The Yuma public is invited to attend the events. Admission to all the events is free. Dogs not registered in the show are asked to stay home, though.
CHANCE TO SHOP: Twenty-five vendors from around the nation plan to peddle their unique wares at the show. "You name it, they're going to be selling it," Richard Lackey said. "A lot of this is merchandise you don't normally find in stores, too."
