Local FFA members take part in livestock show poster contest

Ten Yuma FFA members and one Kofa FFA member participated in the recent Arizona National Livestock Show Poster Contest held during the annual show in Phoenix.

The FFA members’ posters were judged in six categories, based on educational content, clarity, neatness and originality. Local winners included:
  • Open category — Tiffany Wilson, Kofa, second place; Crystal Walle, Yuma, third place; Vanessa Salazar, Yuma, fourth; Dakota Roberts, Yuma, fifth; and Ashley Dries, Yuma, ninth.

  • Cattle category — Tiffany Wilson, Kofa, second place; and Kelsey Goines, Yuma, fourth place.

  • Sheep category — Tiffany Wilson, Kofa, first place; and Vanessa Salazar, Yuma, fourth place.

  • Swine category — Tiffany Wilson, Kofa, first place; Ashley Alarcon, Yuma, sixth place; and Krystal Crawford, Yuma, ninth.

  • Goat category — Tiffany Wilson, Kofa, first place; and Katie Bierhaalder, Yuma, second place.

  • Horse category — Aerika Leeds, Yuma, first place; Nemesis Lavandier, Yuma, sixth place; and Vanessa Salazar, Yuma, seventh.

Minimum wage meeting

An information meeting about new regulations for the minimum wage increase will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Booth Machinery, Araby Road and 30th Street.

The event is co-hosted by the Arizona Farm Bureau and Industrial Commission of Arizona.

All employers are encouraged to attend.

Field day planned Wednesday

The Yuma Valley Ag Center, 6425 W. 8th St., in conjunction with Yuma County Cooperative Extension, will host a field day Wednesday.

The event starts at 7:45 a.m.

The highlights will be insect management, pathogen control, food safety and wide-bed vegetable planting schemes.

It concludes with a hosted lunch at noon.

Four Arizona, California and CCA credit hours are pending.

Community science summit

A community science summit will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Arizona Western College in Building 282.

Representatives from the various science-based organizations, such as health care, agriculture, military and federal agencies, are invited to attend.

They are encouraged to share their vision for the future of the science program at AWC and Northern Arizona University-Yuma.

Summit coordinator Tim Whittier said the goal is to find out what the community needs in terms of science courses and services, and gather ideas for the future of the program.

He said the timing fits with construction of two new science buildings on the campus.

Ammonia Safety Day

The third annual Yuma Area Ammonia Safety Day will be held from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Yuma Civic Center. Admission is free and will include lunch.

The purpose is to provide information about the hazards of ammonia, how to reduce the risk of an ammonia release emergency, how to respond to such an emergency and working with local emergency responders.

Tulare ag expo in 40th year

Forty years of innovative agriculture will be celebrated during the annual World Ag Expo Feb. 13-15 in Tulare, Calif.

Billed as the world's largest agricultural exposition, the show attracts more than 1,600 exhibitors and 100,000 visitors from 66 countries who come to see cutting-edge technology.

Several seminars will also be offered, including Rural Health and Safety, How Air and Water Regulations will Impact Agriculture, Nutrient Management, Alternative Fuels, Is Organic Farming for You?, Public Perception, Is the U.S. Farm Policy in Jeopardy?, U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, Emerging Markets and other topics.

Family Farm Alliance conference

The 2007 Family Farm Alliance annual conference will be Feb. 22-23 at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

The conference theme is "Farming Is National Security." Topics will include impact on agriculture of burgeoning development in the West, climate change's potential impact on farming, how political and academic leaders are working to resolve Western environmental conflicts and hot Western water issues.
