Celia Lara Arviso

In memory of Mrs. Celia Lara Arviso of Yuma, Arizona. She was born February 15, 1932 in Nochistian, Zacatecs, Mexico. She was 74 years old. She died Thursday, February 1, 2007 at her home.

Celia was employed by the St. Francis of Assisi Church working as Director of Apostolic Hispanic retiring in 1993. She was a graduate of Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, California in religious studies. She was an educator for Arizona Community College. Celia received the Instrument of Peace Award in 1987 from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She was also was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she was a minister and a member of the prayer group.

Celia is survived by her sister, Carmela Fresquez; and brother, Manuel Lara Frias, both are of San Francisco, California; sons and daughters, Ron and Victoria Arviso, of Yuma, Joey and Teresa Arviso, of Phoenix, Arizona, Barbara and Mike McCarthy, of Thatcher, Arizona, Margie Leyva and Bernadette Arviso and George Arviso, of Phoenix, Teresa Gray, of Reno, Nevada, Lourdes and Mark Chaidez and Pete and Carmen Arviso, of Yuma. Celia is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Arviso; and her parents, Braulio Lara and Placida Frias.

A wake will be at St. Francis Catholic Church on Thursday, February 8, 2007 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with rosary at 8 p.m. The mass will be at St. Francis Catholic Church on Friday, February 9, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. to be followed by a private cremation.

Pallbearers include Ron Arviso, Joey Arviso, Pete Arviso, Manuel Villa, Alejandro Vasquez, Joe Ramirez, and Rodolfo Ramirez.

Honorary pallbearers are Michael Arviso, Mario Arviso, David Lindsey, Andres Leyva, Christopher Arviso and Gabriel Arviso, Augustine Aranda, and Julio Ascencio.


Deane Creamer Close

Deane Creamer Close lost her battle with cancer in the early morning hours of Monday, February 5, 2007. She was born August 30, 1959 in Bronxville, NY.

She attended local schools in Scarsdale, New York and Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Deane earned her BA in Education at Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. From there she followed a childhood desire to move to Arizona where she worked for the Crane School District as a Special Education teacher.

In 1985 she married her best friend, Gary Close, also a teacher, and began a new job at Yuma High School. Despite her illness she worked right up to the Christmas break of 2006. She was a dedicated, loving, caring teacher, counselor, mother, and mentor to so many, many students and fellow teachers. She will be sorely missed.

She and Gary continued their education by attending summer classes at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona where she earned an MA in Education as well as an MA in Multicultural Studies.

She was actively involve in the Yuma Moos 4-H Club, Alpha Delta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Chapter, a girl scout leader at Yuma Lutheran School and a member of the Arizona Education Association.

She and Gary were married on June 9, 1985 at First Presbyterian Church of Yuma where she also taught Sunday School while her children, Phoebe and Thomas, were younger.

Deane leaves behind her loving husband, Gary; daughter, Phoebe; and son, Thomas, all of Yuma; also, her mother, Phoebe Creamer, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; aunt, Jane Cross, of Oakland, California; sister, Janie Plank, of Weston, Massachusetts; half sister, Betsy Vinton, of Wellesley, Massachusetts; half brothers, Tom Creamer, of Somers, New York, and George Creamer, of Weston, Massachusetts; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Fishback Creamer; and her uncle, Bill Creamer.

Services will be at First Presbyterian Church, 598 S. 7th Avenue on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a celebration of her life at the home, 5443 Francis Street, Yuma.

Deane's wish is that, instead of flowers, donations be made to the Deane Creamer Close Memorial Scholarship and Fund in care of the Library at Yuma High School.


Donna Mae Jones

Donna Mae Jones, 74, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Sunday, February 4, 2007 at her home in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born December 4, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri the daughter of Harvey and Frances (Green) Nordsieck. She graduated from West Port High School in 1949.

She worked at Woolworth's in Kansas City, as a Secretary for Farmland Industries in Kansas City, as a waitress at the Grandviewer in Grandview, Missouri, Rodeway Inn at Overland Park, Kansas and she owned and operated Mom's Chuck Wagon in Raymore, Missouri.

On December 23, 1951, she married John Luff, they later divorced. On February 14, 1982 she was united in marriage to Robert Henry Jones, Sr. they shared over twenty-one years of marriage before his death on January 16, 2004.

She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Ottawa and Christ Lutheran Church in Yuma. She was an honorary member of the L.W.M.L. and the Alter Guild. She enjoyed crocheting, needle point and wintering in Yuma.

She is survived by two daughters, Cindy Osiier of Republic, Missouri and Carol Hensley, of Overland Park, Kansas; two step-children, Robert H. Jones Jr., of Ottawa, Kansas and Elizabeth M. Jones, of Tucson, Arizona; a half-sister, Lin Pennington, of Olathe, Kansas; eleven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Lisa Ann Luff on December 6, 1957; and a son, Donald E. Luff on May 6, 2006.

Funeral services will be at Faith Lutheran Church, Ottawa, Kansas on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Hope Cemetery in Ottawa, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2007 at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home.

Ronald "Brent" Herndon

Ronald "Brent" Herndon passed away peacefully at home with his family on Sunday, February 4, 2007. He was born November 3, 1954 in Phoenix and grew up in the rural area between Wellton and Tacna.

Brent attended grade school in Wellton and graduated from Antelope High School and attended Arizona Western College with emphasis in Agriculture. During his college years he began to have a profound interest in aviation and eventually earned his pilot's license at a very young age and soon began flying private charters throughout the West into Mexico.

Brent married Regina Golic in September of 1982 and in the years after had three sons, Brandon, Bryan and Blake. Brent was a loving father and husband as well as an accomplished farmer with more than 20 years of farming under his belt. At middle age he changed careers and began working for the United States Department of Agriculture. He was a member of the Yuma Valley Rod and Gun Club, the Elks and the Masons.

His interests included camping, hunting, fishing and going for rides in Junior's Polaris Ranger. Most of all he loved spending time with his friends and family at his cabin in El Golfo, Mexico.

Brent is survived by his wife, Gina; sons, Brandon, Bryan and Blake; his mother, Josie Herndon; sister, Vicky Riesland; brother, Robert Herndon; sister-in-law, Rommie Herndon; and his many nieces and nephews.

Brent was preceded in death by his brother, Rodney; and his father, Bob "Jake" Herndon.

A celebration of Brent's life will be held on Friday, February 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Mortuary at 2 p.m. Pastor Cecil Pratt from Wellton will officiate with Masonic services to follow.

Pallbearers are Randy Jones, Mark Zeller, Marvin Tipton, Bill Reisland, Gordy Heck, Glen Ball, Robert Herndon and Robert VanMatre.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hospice.

Brent will be missed but always remembered by his friends and family. Adios Wino!
