MATADORS MEN CRUSH COCHISE COLLEGE ON THE ROAD
It was a good night for the Arizona Western men's basketball team. They started off scoring the first 11 points, went on a 29-5 run in the second half and led by as many as 34 points on their way to a 82-54 road win over Cochise College.
"The reason for the big run, was they started putting up outside shots and settling for them. We were great on the defensive boards, limiting them to one shot and our defensive intensity was constant all night long," coach Kelly Green said.
With the win the 10th ranked Matadors stay one game ahead of Eastern Arizona.
JUCO WOMEN BASKETBALL: MATADORS OUT OF FOCUS
The Arizona Western College women's basketball team only in the first six minutes of the game. After trading the lead early on Cochise went on an 11-2 run and never trailed on their way to a 77-63 victory.
"We knew this was a big game, but we didn't have the right mindset from the time we got off the bus," coach Patrick Cunningham said. "We were complaining about little things-things that really didn't have anything to do with the game."
His final verdict, "We got to do a better job of focusing early in big games like this."
Cochise led by as many as 19 points and the Matadors never got closer than seven in the second half.
PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: RAMS BEAT BABO
Antelope defeated Baboquivari 75-60 in its final 2A West Region regular-season game to force a one-game payoff against Yuma Catholic Friday night at Cibola that will determine the second seed for the 2A state tournemant.
"It's pretty important to get that second seed, because the third seed will have to face a metro team," Rams coach Derek Bosch said.
Antelope took care of business Wednesday and took a 24-11 lead into the second quarter. The Rams went on to lead by 20 for most of the game behind 25 points from Aaron Ferris and 21 from Dillon Buchanan.
Mike Holten also scored 11 points for Antelope, which finished the regular season 15-11 overall and 9-3 in the 2A West.
PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: ANTELOPE'S OFF TO STATE
Antelope's girls basketball team held onto a 46-43 win to earn a fourth seed in the state playoffs.
The Rams (9-9, 6-6 2A West) were down 21-18 at halftime but ran away with the third quarter, scoring 23 of their 28 second half points.
Baboquivari took over the fourth quarter with a smothering full courth press, but Antelope held onto the lead. Antelope coach Anna Delgado said her team is still learning how to break a press and they had to deal with it the entire game. "At the end they were turning the ball over more and getting anxious," Delgado said. "We did a good job of breaking it, but when breaking it still turned the ball over."
Leti Monjardin scored 14 points and got 18 rebounds. Rocio Lopez put in 12 points with 12 rebounds while Dayssy Maldonando scored 11 with 11 rebounds.
The winning team got to go to state, and Delgado said the team is excited to be able to keep playing. "It was do or die for us tonight, so they're thrilled."
