Psst! Secret menus at local eateries

There’s rumors floating around town that there are "secret menus" at some of our restaurants — but they are not rumors, it’s true.

Some fast-food restaurants have "secret menus" from which you can order something not displayed on their regular menu boards.

Assistant manager Alan Vergara at the Sonic Drive-In at 3120 S. Pacific Ave. said people will often order items that are no longer on the menu. He said the average person would not know to order these items.

These include:
Junior Double Cheeseburger — Double meat and cheese. Cost: $1.99
BLT — Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato. Cost: $2.79
Extreme Tator Tots — Tator Tots topped with chili, cheese, jalapeños, onions and ranch. Cost: $2.99
3-Piece Order of Chicken Strips. Cost: $2.99
Family Popcorn Chicken — a box full of popcorn chicken. Cost: $9.79.

Vergara said the Family Popcorn Chicken is the only item that has never appeared on a Sonic menu, but some people still know to order it.

Junga Juice, a chain restaurant that has a newly opened franchise at 1418 S. Yuma Palms Parkway, also has a "secret menu," according to owner Patti Chevallier.

The restaurant makes fruit smoothies that come with a free "jolt," or nutritional supplement, Chevallier said.

Smoothies that are not on their menu board but are available upon request are:
Tropical Breeze — papaya, pineapple, peach and mango
Blackberry Cordial — raspberry, blackberry and chocolate
Mountain Mist — cranberry, strawberry, blueberry and banana
TBA — guava and strawberry
White Chocolate Raspberry

Chevallier said all smoothies on the secret and normal menu cost $4.25.

The biggest rumored "secret menu" fast food place is In-N-Out Burger, which is a newly opened, very popular restaurant in the Yuma Palms Regional Center.

However, their corporate spokesperson, Phyllis Cudworth, refused to answer questions about their "secret menu," such as how popular it is or how many Yumans order from it.

But it does not seem to be much of a secret, because if you visit www.in-n-out.com, you will find a link to their secret menu under the Menu section.
